Ok, been giving this a lot of thought. Though I know there are countless novels left for me to read, and that there are some fantastic stories waiting to be told, and I've only been exposed to Euro-centric literature... I've been thinking.
If someone came to you and said that they've never read western literature in their life, and wants to read one novel before they die (or set of novels/series), what would you recommend? Now this isn't a sort of oh read some Shakespeare, then some DOstoyevski, or can't really decide between this author or that...
I'm asking: If you, as you are, an intelligent educated person, could have only read the ONE novel in your life, which novel would you want that to be?
For me, in all honesty, I believe it would be Pullman's "Dark Materials" trilogy. It encompasses everything. Every thought, question, predicament, about people and society and religion and the very, very thin line between cruel, evil, well-meaning, and good (the last such a rare quality to be found in anything). And truth, lies, the complexity of living things, dead things, past things; there is so much more than we realise, it's awe-inspiring, dreadful, wonderful, but nothing
spectacular or as you'd not expect it. Pullman, in my opinion is the most underrated author living today.
I was going to go into way more specifics about why I think this series is *IT* for me,
the books that I would give all the others up for, but I just realised I have to go, so I'll leave it for later.
I would love to hear what you guys think! And what book/s you would say!
